DANGER
Always isolate power before touching wiring. If you smell burning or see smoke, stop and call Roy immediately.
The 'Why'
Your night storage heater has gone cold - often because a thermal cut-out has tripped (e.g. blocked vents or something on top), the Off-Peak circuit has tripped, or the wall switches are off. Before you pay for a call-out, try these steps.
The 5-Minute Fix
- Check the consumer unit - ensure the Off-Peak/Storage Heaters circuit has not tripped. Reset if needed.
- Check both wall switches: the 24h Boost (output) and the Off-Peak. Both must be ON.
- For thermal cut-out: isolate power, wait 30+ minutes to cool, locate the reset button (under a flap or top lid), press it, then restore power.
- Never dry damp towels on top of the heater - this is the #1 cause of tripping in Ramsgate rentals.
When it's more than a simple reset
If the reset trips again or the heater stays cold, the fault is likely internal:
- Storage bricks misaligned or damaged - causes uneven heating or overheating.
- Heating elements burnt out - common in older heaters; need replacement by a qualified electrician.
- Internal wiring - can become brittle from heat, leading to shorts or poor connections.
If these steps do not work, you likely have a component failure. Contact Thanet Electrical for a professional diagnostic.
