Many UK homes built in the 1960s and 70s use aluminium cable instead of copper. Aluminium expands more, oxidises, and needs different terminations. Identifying it is the first step to managing risk.

The Symptom

"I'm renovating an old house in Margate and someone said I might have aluminium wiring. How do I tell? Should I be worried?" Customers buying or refurbishing period properties often discover wiring they did not know existed. Aluminium can look similar to copper but behaves very differently.

The Detective Work

Visual inspection: aluminium is often dull grey-silver and may have 'AL' or 'ALA' markings on the sheath. Copper is reddish-brown. A magnet will not stick to aluminium but will to steel-sheathed cable. At accessories, aluminium may show signs of oxidation (white or grey powder) at connections. Electricians check cable size (aluminium often uses larger CSA for same current), termination type (special crimps or paste for Al), and any signs of overheating. Insulation resistance and earth continuity tests are performed. EICR codes (C2/C3) may be issued if aluminium terminations are inadequate.

Thanet Grid Note

Margate and Ramsgate have many Victorian and inter-war properties, but aluminium wiring was used in a specific era (roughly 1965-1972). Cliftonville and some Broadstairs estates were built or rewired during this period. If you have aluminium, ensure any new work uses compatible methods - copper tails with approved connectors, or full rewiring where appropriate.
